MacKinnon named Player of the Week for second time

The rookie forward earned the honor after a historic, four-goal performance versus Chattanooga

Greenville, SC (June 27, 2023) – Following a record-breaking performance against the Chattanooga Red Wolves on Wednesday, Lyam MacKinnon has been named USL League One Player of the Week for Week 15. The Swiss forward tallied four goals on his way to earning POTW honors for the second time this season.

MacKinnon got the action started in 9th minute, when he fired Tyler Polak’s incoming corner kick into the back of the net off the volley. He would score again in the 17th minute before completing his hat trick five minutes later, scoring another volley from a chipped-in cross by Evan Lee. With that strike, the rookie set the record for the fastest hat trick in league history.

He would etch his name into the USL League One history books once more in the second half with his fourth goal of the match. A forward pass from Jacob Labovitz found MacKinnon on the run, and his chipped shot over the goalkeeper and into the goal made him the first player in league history to score four goals in a single match.

Leo Castro, who added a fifth goal to the Triumph’s tally in Wednesday’s match, was also named to the Team of the Week. Along with his goal, Castro won eight duels, made six clearances and earned two fouls.

The Greenville Triumph will look to extend their five-match unbeaten run this weekend when they host Forward Madison in Paladin Stadium. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets for the match are on sale now.

Greenville registers four on Team of the Week

Lyam MacKinnon, Leonardo Castro, Tyler Polak & Lucas Coutinho all tally League One week honors after midweek victory

Greenville, SC (April 25, 2023) – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club had four players on this week’s USL League One Team of the Week roster following a defiant win over the second ranked Charlotte Independence to shoot Greenville to fourth in standings. Leonardo Castro, Tyler Polak and Lucas Coutinho made the eleven alongside Lyam MacKinnon, who was named Player of the Week. Greenville also had Aaron Walker on the TOTW Bench.

Lyam McKinnon tallied his first professional goal last Wednesday against the Independence along with an assist. The Swiss rookie returned to the starting lineup in Charlotte after appearances in the first two matches of the season, including Greenville’s U.S. Open Cup match. MacKinnon excelled at finding the open space and dribbling defenders to shift the Greenville offense forward.

The League One assist leader, Leo Castro, makes his second TOTW roster after a stellar match. Former Kaizer striker, was instrumental in Greenville’s first and third goals, with an assist for each on Wednesday. Standing at 6’1, Castro won six out of seven aerial duels serving as an attacking stronghold to distribute and control possession of the ball in the final third.

Tyler Polak returned to his familiar left back role against Charlotte after injuries shuffled the defender to center back for much of the season. The former All-League player picked up where he left off, earning a TOTW appearance after playing a full 90 minutes and completing 87% of his passes on Wednesday. Defensively, Polak had one block, four clearances and had three interceptions in the club’s 3-1 win.

Lucas Coutinho also appears on TOTW, continuing his run of great play after being named Player of the Week in April after a brace and assist in the April 19th win over Central Valley. Coutinho scored the club’s third goal of the night against Charlotte, played 68 minutes and completing 72% of his passes and winning 71% of his duels.

Aaron Walker secured a spot on the TOTW Bench after notching his first goal of the season from distance and receiving a nomination for Goal of the Week.

Four Triumph Players earn Team of the Week Honors

Coutinho, Polak, Pilato & Castro honored by league for performances in six-point week

Greenville, SC (April 25, 2023) – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club had four players on this week’s USL League One Team of the Week roster following a two-win week for the club. Tyler Polak, Noah Pilato and Leonardo Castro made the eleven alongside Lucas Coutinho, who was named player of the week. Greenville also had Jonah Biggar and Aaron Walker on the TOTW Bench.

After two-straight shutout wins with two or more goals, Greenville claimed the most TOTW honors the club has seen this season. Strong showings from Coutinho, Polak, Pilato and Castro helped the Triumph jump from twelfth to fourth in league standings last week.

Lucas Coutinho earned his first Player of the Week honor with the Triumph following a stat-packed match against Fuego FC on April 19^th. The Brazilian recorded a brace and assist in 88 minutes to push Greenville to its first win this season. Coutinho consistently held a 75% passing accuracy rate with over 160 minutes played between both matches.

Tyler Polak tallied his first award since an injured sidelined him in 2022. A vital component of the Greenville backline, Polak stifled the Fuego and Lexington attacks. The veteran helped lead academy player, Jonah Biggar and midfielder turned outside back, Tevin Shaw in a double-match week. He recorded 90 plus minutes in each night with an outstanding 97% passing accuracy against Lexington, logging two tackles, five clearances, and three interceptions.

Noah Pilato, now with three goals on the year, sits second in the Golden Boot race. Pilato recorded his first goal on April 15^th against Forward Madison before notching two more in the following week’s matches against Fuego and Lexington SC. The midfielder has had an impressive return to the game following two injured plagued seasons, he has appeared in all of Greenville’s matches and recorded points in the last three.

The newest Triumph member, Leo Castro can add his first USL League One award to his decorated resume. Castro was key in creating space in the Greenville attack for both matches, deploying a diversion for the opponents and opening up the final third for his team. He assisted two of Greenville’s three goals on Wednesday and scored one goal, and won 14 out of 22 duels on Saturday.

Jonah Biggar and Aaron Walker also had honorable mentions on the League TOTW Bench from their contributions in week six. The 18-year-old Academy signee and 2021 All-League Second Team midfielder logged their first League recognitions this season.

Greenville Triumph, South Georgia Tormenta Announce “Peach States Derby”

Founding members of USL League One create trophy for regional rivalry

Greenville, SC (April 7, 2023) –Greenville Triumph SC and South Georgia Tormenta FC have officially formalized their rivalry with the name “Peach States Derby,” highlighting the rich history of peaches in both states. The Peach States Derby honors the legacy of the iconic fruit by bringing together the two teams from South Carolina and Georgia to compete throughout the regular season for a trophy that will be presented on a later date.

Peaches have long been a beloved fruit in both Georgia and South Carolina, with each state laying claim to their own unique variety. In Georgia — also known as “The Peach State” across the United States — the peach industry dates back to the 1800s and has become a significant contributor to the state’s economy, with over 1.6 million trees producing millions of pounds of peaches each year. Similarly, South Carolina has a rich peach-growing history that dates back to the late 1800s, with the state producing more than three times the amount (in pounds) of peaches harvested in Georgia in a typical season.

The rivalry name was chosen after much discussion and consideration with the club’s supporters’ groups and fans across the region. Following an initial poll to determine interest in rivalry name options, supporters from both clubs supported the peach-themed rivalry name options, which ultimately led to Peach States Derby being selected and tweaked to highlight the shared border between the states.

How it Works:

The team with the most points from the regular season matches between the two teams will be awarded the Peach States Derby Trophy. To note, the trophy is based only on the regular season. Playoff matches, Open Cup matches and exhibition matches are not included in the decision of awarding the trophy. If both teams are tied in points come the end of the season, the first tie breaker will be total goals scored in the series, and the second tie breaker will be away goals scored.

Saturday, April 8, will mark the 16th meeting between the two League One sides that began with the inaugural League One match, resulting in a 1-0 Tormenta FC win on March 30, 2019, at Erk Russell Park in Statesboro, Georgia. Greenville got revenge in the clubs’ inaugural Open Cup match, winning 1-0 at Legacy Early College in Greenville. The clubs fought to the highest-scoring match in League One History, a 5-5 draw, in 2022 before facing off in the playoff semifinals later that year on Tormenta FC’s route to the 2022 League One Title.

Triumph SC travels to Statesboro to face Tormenta on Saturday, April 8^th at 7:30 PM. They will meet two more times this season: in Greenville on Saturday, June 3^rd, and back in Statesboro on Saturday, July 22^nd to close out the season series.

2023 USL League One Home Schedule Released

Triumph opens season at Furman’s Paladin Stadium on Saturday, March 25th

Tampa, FL (January 11, 2023) – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club will begin its pursuit of the USL League One title on March 25, 2023, against the Richmond Kickers as part of a 32-match slate unveiled today by the United Soccer League. The club will play 11 opponents, including 2 newcomers, One Knox SC and Lexington Sporting Club, across a season that runs from late March to mid-October.

Greenville’s quest for a fifth straight playoff berth begins on Saturday, March 25^th, when the club hosts the Richmond Kickers at Furman’s Paladin Stadium at 7:00 PM. The Triumph recently announced Paladin Stadium as the club’s home for the 2023 season.

After the home opener, GTSC hits the road to face southern rival and 2022 League One champion, Tormenta on April 8^th in South Georgia. The League One originals play three times this season, including June 3^rd in Greenville just before the Triumph meets another rival at home on June 10^th in Union Omaha.

The Triumph will welcome expansion side Knoxville to the Upstate for the first time on May 20^th^. Knoxville returns on July 15^th to cap a GTSC three-match home stand or the Triumph that includes Chattanooga and Madison.

Later in the summer, Greenville will host their closest geographic opponent, the Charlotte Independence, on August 5^th for the final round of their 3-match series. Greenville will close out the home regular season slate by hosting League One’s second expansion side for 2023, Lexington, for the first time. The home finale will kick at 7:00 PM on Saturday, October 14^th.

The club also announced 7:00 PM kick times for all Friday & Saturday matches, while the three Wednesday home matches will kick off at 7:30 PM.

Furman University to host Greenville Triumph, Greenville Liberty for 2023 Season

Soccer Club continues work toward construction of a multi-use stadium to host matches in 2024

The Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty will play their home matches at Furman University’s Paladin Stadium in 2023 as the soccer club works toward construction of a multi-use stadium to host matches as early as 2024, the team announced today.

“We are proud to call Furman University the official match home of the Triumph and Liberty,” said Chris Lewis, president of the Greenville Triumph Soccer Club. “Furman has been a fantastic partner as the training site for the Liberty. Furman’s sophisticated athletic facilities, resources, and core values make it a perfect fit for our organization and playing our home matches at the stadium only builds on that relationship.”

Since its formation as the Upstate’s professional soccer club, the Greenville Triumph men’s team has played its first four seasons at Legacy Early College in West Greenville. The Greenville Liberty pre-professional women’s team joined them at Legacy Early College for their 2022 inaugural season.

Greenville Triumph Chairman and owner, Joe Erwin, praised Legacy Early College and its founder, William Brown, for their hospitality. “Though we originally planned to stay just two seasons, the school graciously accommodated us for two more years,” Erwin said. “We will be forever grateful for the memories created on that pitch, the school administrators and staff with whom we worked, and the incredible scholars we’ve met along the way.”

The Triumph will continue its Legacy Early College internship program and have donated a scoreboard, field improvements and stadium amenities to the school.

“At Furman, the team will continue to build on the fan experience the organization has committed to providing since its inception,” said Doug Erwin, vice chairman and chief brand officer for the Triumph. “Fans can look forward to the improved amenities and greater capacity of Paladin Stadium.”

Furman will continue as the training site for the Greenville Liberty, and the Greenville Triumph will continue to use Bob Jones University as its training site.

“Furman University is honored to partner with the Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty, and we are thrilled to host them on campus this season,” said Vice President for Athletics Jason Donnelly. “Their mission to use soccer as a platform to inspire unity and create joy in a way that unites the people of Upstate South Carolina and beyond both complements our university’s goals and helps us to extend our Paladin reach.”

The Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty have featured several current and former Paladins, including Grace Baghdady, Caitlin Reilly, Camryn Bolick, Cameron Whitacre, Maggie Miller, Riley Parsons, Cambelle Roberson, Ben Hale, Cole McLagan and Miles Fenton.

The Greenville Liberty competed in the USL W League’s inaugural season in the Summer of 2022, finishing undefeated at home. Greenville Triumph men’s professional team began play in 2019 in the USL League One. The men’s team has appeared in three league finals, including winning the USL League One Championship in 2020.

The Greenville Triumph kicks off its fifth season at home against the Richmond Kickers on March 25 andwill release the full season schedule Jan. 11. Greenville Triumph Announces 2023 Home Opener Date and Opponent

Greenville welcomes Richmond Kickers to Upstate for 2023 Home Opener

Greenville, SC (January 5, 2023)- The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club in conjunction with USL League One announced its 2023 Home Opener ahead of their fifth season. The Triumph will welcome the Richmond Kickers to the Upstate on Saturday, March 25^th.

Greenville enters the 2023 season in search of a fifth straight playoff berth after losing in the 2022 playoff semifinals to eventual champion-Tormenta FC. Greenville finished the 2022 season 12-8-10, good for second in regular season play. The home opener will mark a rematch of the 2022 regular season finale, which ended in 1-1 draw. Greenville was one of two teams to go undefeated against Richmond in 2022, pushing its all-time record to 4-3-1 against the Virginia club.

On the road…

Greenville will travel to Forward Madison on Saturday, April 15^th for their home opener at Breese Stevens Field stadium. Greenville is 2-1-5 overall against Forward after the 2022 season.

Four Make Team of the Week, Walker Player of the Week After 2-0 Victory

Walker, Shultz, Gavilanes & Christensen earn honors after shutout of Madison

Greenville, SC (May 16, 2022) – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 7 of the 2022 regular season with four Greenville Triumph SC players earning honors. Midfielder Aaron Walker earned top honors, also being named Player of the Week. Walker scored his second goal of the season and first assist last Friday in Greenville’s 2-0 victory over Forward Madison FC.

Walker and Gavilanes made a dynamic duo last weekend, each walking away with a goal and an assist. Walker recorded a 91% pass completion rate, 88% completion on long balls and won nine of 12 ground and aerial battles. This was Walker’s second time being named to TOTW for the 2022 season. Greenville’s 2-0 win is the highest-scoring match the team has played in league competition this season and continued their unbeaten streak.

Greenville’s overwhelming victory saw three more Triumph players on the Team of the Week including Paul Christensen, Nate Shultz, and Allen Gavilanes.

Christensen was the only keeper to record a clean sheet last week out of four other matchups. Shultz assisted Christensen in securing the defense for Greenville, tallying four clearances, three recoveries, an interception and winning 12 of 15 ground and air duals. Gavilanes rounded out the Triumph players on week 7 TOTW. Gavilanes, who has been putting up numbers all season, finally claimed his first goal and assist in Greenville’s victory over Madison.
