Greenville, SC – If the weight of three straight losses was weighing on the Triumph, it didn’t show Wednesday night at Legacy Early College as the club dominated their U.S. Open Cup first round match against League One foe Tormenta FC, taking the match 1-0 and setting up a Palmetto State clash against USL Championship’s Charleston Battery.
Greenville came in to the match scoreless in their last three matches and looking to avenge a 0-1 loss at Statesboro in the club’s first-ever match. The pairing was the only pro vs. pro matchup of teams in the first round and marked the second of now 5 matchups between the two clubs this season. A short turnaround from last Saturday’s match against North Texas saw the Triumph tinker with the starting XI to conserve energy and battle a well-rested Tormenta side coming off a bye.
The Triumph came out of the gate hot in the first half, dictating play and creating early chances that resulted in a few narrow misses. Though the Triumph went into the half scoreless for a fourth straight match, they came out strong in the second half, totaling 10 shots and breaking through in the 75th minute off of a scrum in front of goal that ended with Anderson native Cole Seiler find the back of the net and celebrate his first goal of the season.
Greenville held strong for the final 15 minutes, with Dallas Jaye grabbing a few late saves and the Triumph holding on to celebrate in front of vocal fans celebrating the end of the team’s scoreless skid.
“Last week’s loss was a blessing in disguise,” said Triumph defender Cole Seiler. The short turnaround helped create a sense of urgency to right our wrongs and the message in the locker room this week was to come out fast and avoid the domino effect.”
The Triumph’s victory advances them to the second round of the U.S. Open Cup to face South Carolina’s other professional team, the Charleston Battery of the second-division USL Championship next Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00pm at Legacy Early College. The pregame fan fest will begin at 5:00pm, with the match beginning at 7:00pm. All tickets will be offered at a discounted Open Cup rate, and Season Ticket Members will have right of first refusal to purchase their seats. Tickets can be purchased beginning Thursday morning by clicking here.
