WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Where to begin? For the Greenville Triumph, Saturday night’s match has been three years in the making. After two road playoff matches in 2019 and a COVID-cancelled 2020 League One Final set to be contested in Greenville, Saturday’s semifinal will mark the first home playoff match for the 2019 finalists and 2020 champions. Standing in the way of a third straight League One Final appearance is a Chattanooga Red Wolves squad in their first playoff campaign, but with a win already under their belt during Greenville’s bye.
A lack of familiarity will not be an issue, as the clubs will face off for the fifth time in 2021. Greenville has yet to drop a match to Chattanooga this season, but has only managed one win across four close matches. Triumph SC enters Saturday after ending the 2021 season on a scorching nine-match unbeaten run that vaulted them from the bottom quarter of the table to second place and a first-round bye. Chattanooga earned a home playoff match, but saw the bye slip away after a loss at Madison to end the regular season and a 1-1-4 record over their last six matches. Undeterred, Chattanooga was able to outlast North Texas in extra time in the quarterfinals after a late match-winning goal.
The key to a potential Greenville victory might be early goals. Chattanooga’s success has been dependent on late goals. Chattanooga has earned 14 points this season after trailing, and that never-say-die attitude was on display in Chattanooga’s gutty quarterfinal win. To get to goal, though, Chattanooga will have to go through a Greenville defense that has only conceded one goal since the calendar turned to fall. Paul Christensen’s form in goal and the stellar play of centerbacks Evan Lee and Second-Team All-League selection Brandon Fricke has stopped opposing attacks from forming any attacks in front of goal. On the wings, Tyler Polak’s positioning and Abdi Mohamed’s ability to quickly turn defense into offense have tilted the field away from the Triumph net.
Look for Greenville to attack from first whistle and try to establish a lead that could allow the defense to play aggressively and aim to shut down any late-game heroics from the visitors on Saturday night.
Players to Watch
Juan Galindrez, forward, Chattanooga: At the center of Chattanooga’s attack is forward Juan Galindrez, who scored ten goals for the Red Wolves during the regular season. Add in his quarterfinal winner last week, and the Columbia native has four match-deciding goals on the season in the 84th minute or later. Galindrez has only eight starts on the season, but his lethal touch off the bench is going to have to be the focus of Greenville’s defense in the second half.
Noah Pilato, midfielder, Greenville: If there’s one wildcard player for Saturday night, it’s Greenville’s Noah Pilato. The 2020 first-team All-League midfielder hasn’t made waves in 2021, as a back injury cost him all but five matches in the regular season. He returned to the field in Greenville’s final regular season match against Chattanooga on October 23rd, but he had to miss the finale against North Carolina. Pilato was able to train for two full weeks after the NCFC match, though, and the dangerous touch that saw multiple highlight reel goals in 2020 could prove the difference for the Triumph. It remains to be seen how he’ll be used this weekend, but Pilato could bring a spark that sends Greenville to a third-straight League One Final.
