WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Tonight, the Greenville Triumph will host Chattanooga for a second time this year. In their first meeting, Greenville dominated the Tennessee club with a 5-1 win. It was a record-breaking night for Lyam MacKinnon, who notched the first four-goal match in USL League One history before Leo Castro capped off the match with a goal to solidify the lopsided victory.

This will be Greenville’s second match in a five-day stretch before facing Union Omaha on Saturday. Last weekend, dangerous weather and injuries delayed Greenville and Northern Colorado’s match into the early hours of the morning for east coasters. The match ended in a 0-0 stalemate and Greenville maintaining its sixth seed. 

After earning a challenging point on the road without a handful of their starters, Greenville enters Wednesday’s match with more optimism in its depth. Both Devin Boyce and Leo Castro have been cleared to play and may see some minutes on the field against Chattanooga. Last weekend, late in the second half, goalkeeper Gunther Rankenburg replaced starting keeper, Jared Mazzola. With Mazzola questionable for tonight’s match, we might see the rookie earn some more minutes in relief of Greenville’s first-year starting keeper. After a goal line save and some hard knocks on Saturday, Jamie Smith will be back in full force along with Evan Lee and Aaron Walker. 

Chattanooga has had a trialing season, managing only five victories so far with a 5-13-5 record overall. Most recently, they lost last Saturday against Union Omaha. A close 2-1 match didn’t fall in favor of the Red Wolves and kept the side at 11^th place on the table. Despite a downward trajectory, Chattanooga still has the potential to turn it around this season. The club has added players to its roster throughout the summer, including former Greenville striker, Marios Lomis, who could find himself in the lineup against his former club on Wednesday.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Greenville and NOCO meet late in the season and just in time to compete for playoff contention when the clubs face off on Saturday. After this weekend, the two teams will be halfway through their series, with only two matches slated against each other in the 2023 regular season.

Greenville looks to earn points after falling 2-1 to North Carolina FC last Saturday. Lyam MacKinnon scored in the late stages of the first half, but NCFC responded with two goals of their own in the second period to overtake the Triumph. Greenville is 9-7-6 this season and dropped to the sixth spot for week 23.

Unfortunately for the away team, Greenville will face a challenge with its personnel this weekend. Three starters for the South Carolina side are unavailable due to illness or injury. Defender, Tyler Polak will be out again this week, along with Devin Boyce and Leonardo Castro.

Following a disappointing inaugural season, Hailstorm has taken the table by storm in the recent months. Not only do they boast the Golden Boat leader in Trevor Amann with 16 goals this year, but also the best goal differential in the league with +11. Despite leading the pack for most of the summer, the Colorado side has tallied four-straight losses in headed into this weekend. The club teeters just above Greenville in the fifth seed, but to their favor has the most matches in hand of any club in the table with just 20 played.

Harkes, recently named League One’s Coach of the Month for July, missed the club’s 3-2 win over Charlotte on August 5^th before returning to the sideline for last week’s road match at North Carolina FC.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Greenville is coming off a win over another North Carolina club from the weekend when they topped the Jacks from Charlotte on Star Wars Night. The home team secured the 3-2 win following a brace in the first half by Leo Castro to come back and take the lead, accompanied by a penalty kick winner from Aaron Walker in the 87^th minute.

Fans saw a different lineup on Saturday as Tevin Shaw returned to the starting XI and Noah Franke made his third start of the year. Jamie Smith and Lyam MacKinnon also recorded minutes last weekend following their comeback from injuries. The Triumph still sit sixth in league standings but have extended the gap between itself and South Georgia Tormenta FC with its win. Greenville holds a 9-6-5 record with 32 points this season, keeping them above the cutoff line for playoffs.

At the top of the table, NCFC has 38 points and an 11-4-5 record. The North Carolina side most recently announced its pending return to the USL Championship prior to drawing the Richmond Kickers 2-2 on Wednesday.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club hosts the Charlotte Independence for the first time this season after traveling to the N.C. club in May and mid-July. Greenville is back on its home turf after a three-match road stretch that resulted in a loss, win and draw. Most recently, John Harkes’ squad drew Forward Madison 1-1 in Wisconsin last Saturday. Following the draw and midweek matches around the league, Greenville fell to sixth in the table with an 8-6-5 record.

Despite a trialing trip to Wisconsin, there were several bright spots for Greenville. Defender Noah Franke made his first start of 2023 and netted his first professional goal to level the score. Jamie Smith and Tevin Shaw also returned to the pitch for the first time since suffering injuries and are all clear for future play. Greenville will have its largest player pool for selection this season on Saturday, with only one player out. Tyler Polak will miss this weekend’s match following a thigh injury sustained in the draw at Madison.

Greenville started its first match of this away series at Charlotte with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss. For their final matchup of the year, Charlotte now visits Paladin Stadium coming off a 4-1 win over number one seed, Northern Colorado. With a 9-6-6 record Charlotte has taken third in the league standings and would be a significant win for Greenville to move up the table.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club returns to the pitch after a 2-1 win in the Peach State Derby over South Georgia Tormenta on July 22nd. This victory has the Triumph sitting at fifth in League One standings, with an 8-6-4 season record. A week later the team turns its attention to its third and final match against Forward Madison.

The South Carolina side had a challenging start to the season when both teams first met on April 15^th that resulted in a 4-1 Mingo’ win. However, it wouldn’t take long for Greenville to find their rhythm and reestablish themselves as a top team. With the second most goals in the league, Greenville has demonstrated its ability to put points on the board. Leading the charge in is Leo Castro, who secured a brace against Tormenta and moved to fifth in the Golden Boot race. GTSC and Madison’s last meeting ended in victory for the Triumph on July 1^st. Midfielder, Aaron Walker gave Greenville the lead by sinking a penalty kick in the first half. Despite effort from Madison to equal the score, the Triumph’s defense and goalkeeper Jared Mazzola maintained the shutout.

Although a stout defensive team, Greenville’s roster may be affected going into tomorrow’s match due to injuries. Captain, Tyler Polak who has appeared in every match thus far is considered questionable for play, along with Hassan Gabo. On the offense, Lyam MacKinnon and Tevin Shaw have both seen improvements and have the potential to make the 18 this weekend after being out the previous matches.

Forward Madison is forced to make a quick turnaround from their Wednesday match, where they took a dramatic 4-1 loss to South Georgia Tormenta. Despite their defeat, Madison sits at fourth in the standings with an 8-5-5 season. Only one point separates Greenville and Madison on the table, so a win for either team could tip the scale.

The Greenville Triumph is slated for its third match in a week tomorrow night at 7:30 PM in Statesboro, G.A. The title of the Peach States Derby is on the line between Greenville and Tormenta FC as the two teams settle the final match in the series.

Greenville enters Saturday ahead of Tormenta in league rankings, despite its 1-0 loss to the Charlotte Independence on Wednesday night. Although unable to maintain the shutout, Triumph goalkeeper Jared Mazzola delivered one of his performances to date. Mazzola recorded nine saves on Wednesday, the most of any Triumph goalkeeper in a single match. Greenville holds a 7-6-4 record and sits fifth in the table after a seven-match unbeaten streak pushed the club back into playoff position.

Tormenta enters the match on a two-match win streak and hovering at the ninth spot in the league standings. Tormenta took the first match of the rivalry series on April 8^th with a 2-0 win, but Greenville held them to a 1-1 draw in June to keep the trophy within reach. With a loss and draw to Tormenta, Greenville must secure a two-goal win or better tomorrow in order to claim the inaugural Peach State Derby trophy.

The Triumph is coming off a 1-0 victory over One Knox on Saturday, July 15^th in Paladin Stadium. The two teams faced a 45-minute kickoff delay due to inclement weather, and another hour-long delay at the half due to lightning. After even play from the teams, Greenville was able to weather the storm and take home the win thanks to Leo Castro. Castro scored his sixth goal this season with a header off an assist from Allen Gavilanes late in the first half. This victory over one Knox extends Greenville’s win streak to four and unbeaten streak to seven.

Sitting at fifth place in the USL League One rankings, the Triumph has something to prove as they take on fourth-ranked Charlotte. Last time these two teams met, Greenville took home a 3-1 win away at American League Memorial Stadium. As the 2023 season continues, it’s crucial that both teams clinch this victory and maintain their position above the qualification line. The Triumph has been picking up momentum in its offense, dousing their opponents with 13 goals in seven matches. The defense has rounded into form as well, with six matches conceding less than two goals, including three shutouts. Greenville’s keeper, Jared Mazzola, is tied for second in the league’s goalkeeper rankings with 45 saves this season, where Charlotte’s is currently leading with 66 saves. The Queen City team’s goal-stopping reputation might prove to be a roadblock for GTSC, as one of their top scorers, Lyam MacKinnon, will be absent due to a thigh injury sustained in the match versus Forward Madison on July 1^st.

This is the first midweek match the Triumph has faced in four weeks, and they may be entering the pitch with tired legs after just a three-day turnaround from their last competition. Charlotte is coming off a 2-2 draw with the sixth-ranked Richmond Kickers on Saturday, with their 2023 record at 7-5-6. Greenville knocked off table-leaders, Forward Madison, 1-0 in their last matchup nearly 2 weeks ago. A handball in the Mingos’ box resulted in a successful penalty kick for veteran, Aaron Walker. The win rocketed GTSC up to third in league standings, but a bye weekend halted the home side’s quick ascent. Greenville and Tormenta – the only two teams without matches – watched as the table shifted over the break.

Now sitting in sixth place, just above the playoff qualification line, Greenville faces One Knox for the second time in 2023. Earlier this year, Greenville dropped points to the Tennessee team after losing 2-1 despite gaining an early lead. One match short of midway through the season, Greenville has seen some of its top performances leading up to Saturday’s match and will be riding its best form of the season as it goes for a fourth consecutive victory on Saturday. The team has found a combination of success in both the defense and offense while maintaining the health of its players after a rash of injuries at the beginning of the season. While Greenville has a mostly healthy roster for the weekend, Lyam MacKinnon will be noticeably absent after sustaining an injury to his thigh during the Madison match.

On the other side, Knoxville has a difficult, double-match week after falling to Northern Colorado on Tuesday. WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club returns to the field after a history-making performance against the Chattanooga Red Wolves last week, with Lyam MacKinnon recording the league’s first four-goal game in a 5-1 victory. The win was Greenville’s second straight, and the club is now unbeaten in its last five. The streak will be put to the test on Saturday against a red-hot Madison team riding a four-match win streak and sitting atop the league table.

Though much of the five-goal performance’s praise was focused on MacKinnon’s historic night, the offensive performance reflected a much-improved scoring offense for the Triumph in 2023. Greenville leads the league in scoring through 14 matches, a departure from the stellar defense that has been the most-lauded characteristic of the club throughout its first four seasons. It’s no coincidence, then, that the club is on a run of its best form of the season as the defense is beginning to regain its usual high-quality form as players return from the injury bug that hampered the defense across the first two months of the season. Good health from a talented defensive roster and first-year starting goalkeeper Jared Mazzola continuing to sharpen his skills has the Upstate side firing on all cylinders as it heads in to a July that will be a stern test for the team as they look to move up the league table.

The first test comes in the form of Forward Madison, who vaulted to the top of the League One table after a 1-0 midweek victory on Wednesday against South Georgia Tormenta. The victory was the team’s fourth straight, but they’ll need to recover quickly in order to keep pace with a rested Triumph side after a week and a half off. Greenville will need to focus on forward Christian Cheney, Madison’s leading scorer with five goals. Cheney, who played for Central Valley in 2022, scored multiple goals against Greenville last season and will look to move his name up the Golden Boot race list this Saturday.

The Triumph midfield will be challenged by a Madison side that has featured five midfielders at times this season. With two offenses highly-capable of multi-goal efforts, the match could be won and lost on possession and turnovers in the midfield. With only six points separating Madison and Greenville in the table and the Triumph side hungry to move back above the playoff cut line, Saturday’s match should be a big indicator of the playoff potential of both clubs as the season nears the halfway mark.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

After a weekend match in Fresno, the Triumph will return home to face the Chattanooga Red Wolves for the first time this season on Wednesday night. This match will kick off a three-match homestand for Greenville, who are hoping to continue the positive momentum from over the weekend into a climb up the league table.

The Triumph earned its first victory since May 3^rd in a 1-0 win over Central Valley Fuego FC on Saturday. Greenville battled the Californian side to a stalemate through 90 minutes before finding a breakthrough in second half stoppage time, when a headed cross from Alex Cox-Ashwood was redirected into the net by Jacob Labovitz. The victory moved the Triumph into seventh place in the standings with a 4-5-4 record, where they sit three points away from the playoff line.

The match against Fuego FC also saw the return of three players to a Greenville squad that is returning to full strength. Midfielder duo, Aaron Walker and Lucas Coutinho both started Saturday’s match after battling through injuries. Walker logged a full 90 minutes in his return to the pitch, while Coutinho played the first 45’ before being subbed off at the halfway mark. Noah Franke also made an appearance on the travel roster the first time since the Triumph’s April 15^th match against Forward Madison and will be available for selection again this week.

As Greenville looks to earn its second win in four days, Chattanooga will come to Paladin Stadium aiming to put an end to a recent dip in form. After reaching the League One Final last season, the Red Wolves sit in 11^th place in the table with a 3-7-2 record after a 1-5-1 run over their last seven matches. They have conceded the second-most goals in the league and have yet to pick up a point on the road and will be looking to change that on Wednesday.
