Lomis Scores Again As Triumph Extends Unbeaten Run

Greenville, SC – A second half goal from forward Marios Lomis proved the difference Saturday night, as the Greenville Triumph remained undefeated through five, taking three points in Statesboro, Georgia against regional rival, South Georgia Tormenta FC. Greenville remains at the top of the League One standings with a 4-0-1 record through seven weeks of League One action.
Both sides struggled to create quality chances throughout the first half despite Greenville controlling the majority of possession, but it was Greenville that broke through in the 71st minute when midfielder Don Smart found an open Marios Lomis on the left wing. Lomis, a player proven to be clinical in front of goal, slotted home his fifth goal of the season to put the Triumph up 1-0 over South Georgia Tormenta. Marios Lomis now leads the league in goals scored with five and leads the Triumph in points with 10.
“What a savy ball by Don Smart,” said Triumph head coach John Harkes. “Couple that with a tremendous finish by Marios, and we’re up 1-0 on a team that has a lot of weapons. Our defenders did a tremendous job tonight of keeping the ball in front of them, tracking players, and not allowing Tormenta to be dangerous,” he continued. “Evan Lee and Brandon Fricke deserve to be our men of the match because of their attention to detail and complete focus for 90 minutes.”
Milestones were made in tonight’s match as Tormenta goalkeeper Pablo Jara made his 50th USL League One regular season appearance and Triumph players Dallas Jaye and Tyler Polak made their 50th USL League One appearance that includes the 2019 playoffs and final.
The Greenville Triumph return to the pitch on June 13 in the team’s second match against North Texas SC.

The Triumph look to remain undefeated through its first five matches as the John Harkes-led side travels to Statesboro, Georgia for their first look at ninth place South Georgia Tormenta FC. Scouting Tormenta
South Georgia Tormenta has just one win in its first five matches and has allowed eight goals so far this season, tied for third most in the league. Tormenta is one of four teams in the league that has failed to log a clean sheet through the first six weeks of play, and the South Georgia side has only a 10% conversion rate in front of goal thus far.
Tormenta and Greenville are on opposite sides of the spectrum in just about every category. However, when these two teams face off, things are never as simple as they seem to be on pen and paper. Tormenta will have some confidence entering the match after a hard-fought game against North Texas. And although that game resulted in the fourth Tormenta loss this season, the South Georgia side had a lot of quality moments to take back home to Statesboro including a world-class finish by Marco Micaletto.
what to watch for:
Pressure and Discipline: Greenville tested Omaha quite a bit in the first half of last Sunday’s match. But come the second 45, things got a bit stale. As head coach John Harkes said after the match, “We really slowed the game down for them [Omaha]. And the goal came down to discipline on set pieces and turning the ball over too easily.” Both North Carolina FC and Union Omaha have exposed Greenville when there’s a lack of pressure on the ball. With players like Phelps, Liadi and Micaletto on the other side, Tormenta is capable of being dangerous at a moment’s notice.
Put The Game Away: A key to Saturday’s match in Statesboro will be the Triumph’s ability to put Tormenta away early. The home side will undoubtedly be playing with a “something to prove” attitude in hopes to avoid losing five of their first six matches, and teams with that approach become much more dangerous the longer they hang around. When asked what his side needs to improve upon this week after the 1-1 draw, Harkes replied, “We took our foot off the gas heading into the second half [against Omaha], and we allowed them to feel comfortable. We created some open-door solutions for them, and we need to do a better job managing the game this weekend against Tormenta.”
News and notes
Points Leaders: Marios Lomis is tied for first in the league with four goals scored alongside Fort Lauderdale’s Shaan Hundal. The Dutch forward leads Greenville in points with eight. Dallas Jaye is tied for second in clean sheets (2) with Richmond’s Akira Fitzgerald, both players sitting behind Omaha’s Rashid Nuhu.
Milestones: If Tyler Polak and Dallas Jaye play in Saturday’s match, it will mark their 50th League One appearance (including 2019 playoff and final match), all of which have been played with the Greenville Triumph. A number of players are closing in on games played milestones including Evan Lee, Brandon Fricke, Alex Morrell and Don Smart. If Tormenta goalkeeper Pablo Jara plays on Saturday, he will become the first League One player to make 50 regular season appearances.
Injury Report: Midfielder Aaron Walker and winger Alex Morell are hopeful to make their return to the pitch after battling hamstring injuries throughout the last few weeks. Will Mejia continues to recover on the sideline while defender Jacob Goodall will be available for the first time this season.

Match Highlights | Triumph Still Undefeated after 1-1- Draw
After four matches the Triumph remain undefeated, with the first-ever nationally televised League One match ending in a 1-1 draw against Union Omaha. Marios Lomis scored the lone goal for Greenville in their Sunday afternoon matchup and has scored in all four Triumph matches thus far.
Triumph Remain Unbeaten Following 1-1 Draw Against Union Omaha

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph remain undefeated through four matches, with the first-ever nationally televised League One match ending in a 1-1 draw after a second half equalizer from visiting Union Omaha. Marios Lomis scored the lone goal for Greenville in their Sunday afternoon matchup and has scored in all four Triumph matches thus far.
The highly anticipated Week 6 matchup got off to a fast and exciting start in front of another covid-capacity sold-out crowd at Triumph Stadium. Both sides had a handful of chances throughout the first half, and although both attacks generated six shots, it felt as though Greenville saw the majority of opportunities. Midfielder Max Hemmings delivered several dangerous balls into the box behind the Omaha backline, and Don Smart made his presence known on the flank during the first half.
Greenville did a tremendous job transitioning numbers behind the ball, making it extremely difficult for the crafty Omaha attack to find gaps. It was that defensive work from Andrew Booth, who capitalized on a poor first touch in the Omaha midfield and found himself facing goal, in space and with a streaking Marios Lomis to his right. Lomis’s wide run opened up the passing gap, and Booth delivered to put the Triumph’s most clinical finisher in front of goal to find the back post and put the defending League One champions up 1-0.
The momentum switched quickly after halftime as the Omaha attack began to pick up steam. After a near deflection trying to clear a Devin Boyce shot on goal, Omaha was awarded a corner kick and, in the scrum of a redirect, found an unmarked Nic Firmino at the top of the box. Firmino’s half-volley finish was buried past a diving Dallas Jaye to even the match at one with 30 minutes left to play.
Fatigue was a factor throughout the second half, and while the Greenville attack found a few dangerous opportunities, they struggled to convert and ended the match tied 1-1. Omaha remains unbeaten when facing Greenville and both sides will enter Week 7 with identical 3-0-1 records.
“The first half, we tested them quite a bit. We exploited alot of their spaces. They dropped off and conceded quite a bit of space to us, and we were unlucky to finish a couple of chances,” said Triumph head coach, John Harkes. “Then the second half, we really slowed the game down for them. And the goal came down to discipline on set pieces. These are times, early in the season and situations early in the season, where you see who steps up and we needed that today.”
Greenville Triumph returns to action Saturday, May 22 against regional rival South Georgia Tormenta. The match will kickoff at Erk Russell Park at 7:00pm and will be aired on ESPN+ and the CW-62.

Union Omaha is the only other 3-0 team in the league after their win at New England Revolution Wednesday night. Greg Hurst scored the lone goal after coming off the bench alongside Evan Conway in the 59′ minute. Conway and Hurst have proved to be a dangerous pairing, extremely fast and very willing to run at players. Both players have two goals across the first three matches, and as the season progresses more and more attention will be on Hurst and Conway, and they’ll start to draw more defensive pressure and awareness. Omaha does have other effective weapons across their front lines who can strike balls from distance and take players on effectively, including Viader I Masdeu, who leads the league in chances created with nine already logged during the first three matches.
Omaha’s movement patterns off the ball are very effective, and the team transitions quickly and without hesitation. From a defensive perspective, it’s safe to say this will be the toughest test Greenville has seen this season.
what to watch for
Pressure On The Ball: Triumph head coach John Harkes stated that it wasn’t his team’s best performance last Saturday against North Carolina FC. Greenville still found a way to win, and was much better throughout the second half, but could have easily been down at the half if NCFC had capitalized on a few chances. Harkes felt his team lacked conviction in the final third and struggled to get adequate pressure on the ball. North Carolina was able to expose the gaps in behind Greenville on multiple occasions because their outside backs and central midfield players had plenty of time on the ball to pick their heads up and play. With a team as quick to transition as Omaha, and as fast as the Omaha front line, getting adequate pressure on the ball will be a must for Greenville this Sunday.
Focus on Us: As the excitement grows around hosting the League’s first nationally televised match, it would be all too easy to get distracted and lose sight of the habits that make you successful. For Harkes, he’s aware of the storylines. His players are aware of the storylines, and there is a level of excitement to play on national television. But Harkes and his side all know they are best when the focus is on what Greenville does well. “Simply put, we can’t let that be a distraction. We still have to focus on the things day to day that make us successful,” said Harkes. “Mentally, we are at our best when we simply focus on who we are.”
News and notes
Team of the Week: Lachlan McLean and Alex Morrell were selected to League One’s Team of the Week (5). A back-to-back selection for McLean, the Aussie scored his second goal of the season in game-winning fashion last Saturday. Morrell made his starting debut after being out with a hamstring injury and created the most chances for the Greenville attack to earn his first Team of the Week appearance.
Points Leaders: Marios Lomis leads the team with three goals and six points, while Lachlan McLean is just behind the Dutch forward with two goals, one assist and five points. Dallas Jaye is second in clean sheets (2) to Omaha’s Rashid Nuhu (3).

Triumph Sign Two Furman Standouts to Professional Contracts

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club has signed former Furman players Cole McLagan and Ben Hale to professional contracts for the remainder of the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval. McLagan and Hale come to the Triumph following a shortened spring season for Furman Men’s Soccer that saw the school finish the regular season on top of the Southern Conference standings.
McLagan, a defender, is a talented player capable of playing both sides of the ball. The Lee’s Summit, Missouri native garnered second team All-Southern Conference and SoCon All-Freshman honors after tallying four goals and adding an assist during his redshirt freshman campaign in 2017. He was a SoCon Academic Honor Roll member in 2018 and earned first team All-Southern Conference honors as a defender in 2019 after leading the Paladins with eight goals and three assists. McLagan added three goals, two assists and first team All-Conference honors to his career record during the 2020 season.
“Cole is excitingly fast and a very versatile player. He’s been training with us for a while now, and we love his optimistic approach to the game. He’s a competitor and you can tell by watching him that he thoroughly enjoys the game,” said Triumph head coach John Harkes.
Hale came to Furman from Frisco, Texas in 2016 after a standout youth career highlighted by his time with U-19 National Team and the FC Dallas USSF Academy squad. Following a redshirt his freshman year due to an ACL injury, Hale rebounded in a big way and earned second team All-Southern Conference honors and SoCon All-Freshman honors after starting 18 matches in goal with six solo shutouts. In 2018, the 6’1″ goalkeeper won Southern Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and earned a first team All-SoCon selection after leading Furman to a SoCon Tournament title and NCAA Tournament second round appearance. Hale was limited to just four starts in 2019 due to an injury but finished his redshirt senior campaign in 2020 with 9 starts, 37 saves and a 0.97 GAA and became the first player in Conference history to earn both Goalkeeper and Player of the Year honors.
“Ben is a very talented goalkeeper and we’ve been following him for a number of years at Furman,” said Harkes. He’s a great shot stopper, excellent trainer and a natural leader. I think he has a number of good qualities that can transition into the professional level.”
“They’re both very similar,” said Furman head coach Doug Allison. “They’re both extremely competitive, natural leaders and players that want to serve. Although they aren’t from this area, they have become so involved in the community.” Allison continued, “Their qualities both on and off the field will translate very well at the professional level.”
When asked how the connection with Greenville Triumph came about, Allison referenced playing against Triumph assistant coach, Rick Wright. He also referenced the similar ideals that he and head coach John Harkes have regarding player recruitment.
“I’ve been here for 26 years,” said Allison, “And I came to realize quickly that my job is more than winning games. My job is also to graduate players and help them become leaders in whatever field they grow up in. I know that is important for John — to have not only quality players, but quality young men in the community, and that’s what we hope to produce here at Furman.”
McLagan and Hale join a veteran Triumph roster that has led the club to a 3-0-0 start to the 2021 USL League One regular season. They face 2020 runner-up Union Omaha at home Sunday, May 16, in a nationally-televised match on ESPN2 at 4:00 PM.

McLean, Morrell Selected to Week 5 Team of the Week

Greenville, SC – The duo that highlighted much of Greenville’s attack during the 2020 season has returned for more, as Alex Morrell and Lachlan McLean have been selected to Week 5’s Team of the Week. Morrell logged his first start of the season, returning from a hamstring injury, while McLean scored the game winner for Greenville on Saturday night.
Alex Morrell (M) was one of League One’s best playmakers in 2020, and he reprised that role in his first start of 2021, leading all players in Greenville’s win over North Carolina with five chances created.
It’s back-to back Team of the Week appearances for Lachlan McLean (F), whose high-quality header was the difference between Greenville and North Carolina FC on Saturday night. The Australian also won eight duels and played one key pass.
