New Triumph uniform honors Slater Mill’s role in Apollo 11 moon landing
Greenville, SC (March 29, 2022) – The Upstate’s contribution to the Apollo 11 moon landing serves as the inspiration for the Greenville Triumph new away kit, which the club launched Wednesday afternoon. The grey uniform will be worn primarily in away matches for the next two seasons.
Dubbed “The Lunar Kit”, the uniform pays tribute to the historic Slater Mill, located north of downtown Greenville. NASA charged the mill with developing a heat-resistant fabric that could withstand the stresses of space travel. The fabric found its way onto the space suits for the Apollo 11 mission, carrying mankind to one of its greatest achievements. The Slater-produced material continued to be used in decades following on spacesuits and spacecraft for the Apollo and Shuttle programs.
“We wanted the opportunity to tell a unique story about the Upstate with this kit,” said Triumph chief brand officer Doug Erwin. “The story of the Slater Mill and its role in such a monumental historical event is something our region should be extremely proud of, and we’re honored to tell that story to the many Upstate residents that might not have known about it. We’re thrilled with how the kit turned out and can’t wait to see it debut on the field in the coming weeks.”
The gray kit features a lunar surface pattern accented with space-themed trim and a color-matched Triumph crest. Nods to the Slater Mill appear on the rear neckline with a redesigned version of the Slater Mill Village welcome sign featuring the “GTSC” club abbreviation, and a jock tag insignia featuring the Village’s slogan, “The mill that went to the moon”. The right sleeve is accented with a reversed American flag that mirrors NASA spacecraft and the “flying forward” depiction in U.S. flag code. The jersey is complimented with matching gray shorts and gray socks.
The kit is available on the club’s online store and in its retail location on 22 S. Main St. The Lunar Kit will debut next Wednesday when the club travels to Arizona to take on Phoenix Rising in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. GTSC returns to Paladin Stadium on Wednesday, April 19th to face Central Valley Fuego at 7:30 PM.
