Greenville, SC– Former Clemson midfielder Paul Clowes has signed to play for the Greenville Triumph Soccer Club in its inaugural season, pending league and federation approval.
“It’s this new group of players and staff that will set the standards and culture for this team for years to come,” said the Manchester, U.K., native. “I think that’s an exciting challenge. I’m confident with the guys coming in and with Coach John Harkes’ ambition and experience that the first season will be extremely rewarding for the team and the fans.”
A four-year letter winner with the Clemson men’s soccer team, Clowes played 85 games and recorded four goals and 10 assists. Clowes was a member of the ACC Conference Champion team in 2014 when he was named tournament MVP. Clowes finished his senior season in 2015 as ACC Midfielder of the Year.
“Coming back to the Upstate to play is amazing. This state feels like home to me, and I owe so much to the people in this community who made my time at Clemson so special,” said Clowes.
Clemson Coach Mike Noonan described his former player as a perfect balance of style and steel who will set the standard for what it means to be a Triumph player. “Paul Clowes is unequivocally one of the best young men and players I have coached during my tenure at Clemson,” Noonan said. “I’m excited he’s coming home!”
Following his time with the Tigers, D.C. United selected Clowes 32nd overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Clowes played for the Charlotte Independence and, most recently, Orlando City B in the United Soccer League Championship. During the 2017 season, Clowes recorded 1,160 minutes in 16 games for the Florida team now competing with the Triumph in League One of the USL.
Clowes joins defenders Tyler Polak, Evan Lee and forward Jake Keegan on the inaugural season roster.
