WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club enters its third league match of the season on Saturday, April 23 against Tormenta FC at 7:00pm, presented by hummel.
Greenville’s Open Cup run came to an end earlier this week after falling to Major League Soccer’s Charlotte FC in a 2-1 loss in extra time. A long, tough match on Wednesday will test the physical and mental fitness of the team in tomorrow’s match. Fresh legs off the bench and recovery from the Open Cup will be essential as Greenville plays its’ third match in eight days.
A key piece in Greenville’s game will be player rotation. Central defender, Evan Lee will be noticeably absent from this match after receiving a red card in last week’s NCFC draw. However, midfielder, Lucas Coutinho will be a valuable asset to Greenville if he’s able to return from injury. Some greener players like Alex Cox-Ashwood, Patrick Cayelli and Selvin Altimarano may get their shot in Saturday’s match as Coach Harkes looks to rest those with a lot of miles from the Charlotte match.
Tormenta FC will also be challenged physically after playing a similar schedule to Greenville, only having one extra day to recover between Open Cup and league matches. The Statesboro club currently ranks one above Greenville, sitting at 9th in the 2022 standings. Despite having a winning preseason schedule, Tormenta and Greenville are both 0-1-1 in league play this season. Both teams have had success outside league play, though, advancing to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, with Tormenta progressing into the fourth round.
There will another display of this southern rivalry tomorrow night in Triumph stadium, and Greenville is hoping to come away with their first USL League One win of the season.
