Chattanooga, TN – The Triumph’s inability to find the back of the net came back to haunt them again Saturday night, as the Chattanooga Red Wolves broke through in the the waning moments of stoppage time to defeat Greenville 1-0 at David Stanton Field.
The match played out as many have this season for Greenville – numerous shots on goal but nothing to show for it. Chattanooga goalkeeper Alex Mangels turned away the Triumph’s 4 shots on target and the Red Wolves withstood 14 shots, including free kick from Greenville early in stoppage time leading to a scrum in front of goal that almost ended in a Triumph score.
The match seemed destined for a 0-0 draw until the fourth minute of stoppage time when the Red Wolves earned a free kick just outside the box. After the Triumph failed to clear the shot, Eamon Zayed was able to turn on the ball and bury the shot, sealing the match for Chattanooga.
The late goal comes two weeks after the Triumph lost in similar fashion to Charleston in the U.S. Open Cup, conceding a goal in the first minute of stoppage time to seal their fate in the tournament.
“The guys have been given many opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net and create in the final third and we haven’t,” said head coach John Harkes. “They’ll tell you that we don’t want to hear that we dominated the match unless we walk away with a win. It was a lack of discipline that opened up the door at the end and there aren’t excuses for that. The three points were there for us tonight and I’m looking forward to getting back to work next week and seeing who steps up for us moving forward.”
The Triumph return to Greenville Saturday, June 1st to take on South Georgia Tormenta FC at Legacy Early College Field in the second of four League One meetings between the teams. The Fan Fest begins at 5:00 pm, gates open at 6:00 pm and kickoff is at 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
